A Hidden Gem Near Patong

Merlin Beach is a peaceful, lesser-known beach located just a short drive from Patong, near the Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa. It’s often overlooked by tourists, which makes it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the crowds. With soft sand, gentle waves, and a laid-back atmosphere, Merlin Beach offers a relaxing coastal experience in a beautiful natural setting.

What to Expect

Merlin Beach is smaller and more secluded than many of Phuket’s popular beaches. It’s surrounded by palm trees and rocky headlands, giving it a private, sheltered feel. The sand is golden and fairly soft, though parts of the shore are dotted with rocks and coral—especially noticeable at low tide.

The beach is calm and quiet, attracting couples, families, and solo travelers who prefer a more authentic, low-key beach day. It’s also a great place for watching the sunset, with wide views of the horizon and fewer people around.

Swimming and Snorkeling

Swimming is possible during high tide, when the water is deeper and easier to move through. At low tide, much of the coral and rock becomes exposed, which can make entry into the water a bit tricky. However, these shallow areas are great for snorkeling. Small tropical fish can often be seen among the rocks, especially around the edges of the beach.

If you’re into marine life, the nearby coral reef is a highlight. Just be cautious while snorkeling, as the reef is fragile and sharp in places.

Amenities

While Merlin Beach is not as developed as nearby Patong or Karon, there are a few facilities available. The Phuket Marriott Resort is located right next to the beach and offers access to food and drinks if you’re dining there. There are also a few small beach bars and local vendors nearby, depending on the season.

There are no public restrooms on the beach itself, so it’s a good idea to plan ahead or stop at a nearby restaurant. You won’t find water sports or beach chairs for rent like at the more commercial beaches, but that’s part of its appeal—it’s quieter, less busy, and more in tune with nature.

Getting There

Merlin Beach is about a 10-minute drive from Patong and is easy to reach by taxi, tuk-tuk, or rented scooter. The entrance is near the Marriott Resort, and while the beach is not marked with large signs, it’s public and free to access.

Parking is limited, but possible along the roadside. If you’re staying at the Marriott or a nearby hotel, it’s a short walk to the sand.

Best Time to Visit

The best months to visit are between November and April, when the weather is dry and the sea is calm. Mid-morning to early afternoon is perfect for swimming and sunbathing, while late afternoon is ideal if you’re coming to enjoy the sunset.

Low tide reveals much of the coral and rocks, which may not be ideal for swimming but is great for exploring tide pools and marine life close to shore.

Final Thoughts

Merlin Beach is a quiet, scenic getaway just minutes from the action of Patong. It’s perfect for travelers who want to experience Phuket’s natural beauty without the crowds or noise. Whether you’re snorkeling, strolling along the shore, or simply relaxing under the trees, Merlin Beach offers a peaceful retreat with a genuine local feel.
